First Week on the Job

by Princess Fanning

The experience I’ve had while working with DEED has been a tremendous opportunity for me. I’ve met many new people and expanded my perspective on what’s out there in the world. I’d advise anyone who feels they want to strive for something more in life to go for it! Nothing is impossible. Undertaking this new journey in the business world will prepare me for the next step in my work and education.

In the past week of working here I feel I’ve stepped into the world of the unknown and a world beyond my own. It’s a very diverse group of co-workers, but all the people here are nice and welcomed me. They’re helpful and took the time out from what they’re doing to assist me and make sure it’s a work environment I was comfortable in.

I’ve been introduced to the various divisions of the company, who works with what program, and what each person contributes. Before I got placed at DEED, I had just started to learn about economics. Now I’m working in a company where they produce everything that has to do with statistics about the economy!

Some things I look forward to while working here is growing my communication skills, so I can better present myself to a future employer or boss. I also want to get a better understanding of what everyone in this larger department does. Having patience is important too, because it’s takes a lot of concentration to complete a task such as filing, taking notes, observing or even just listening.

This is a work place that I can see myself maturing in, and I can use this experience to motivate others.

Editor’s note: Over the next two months, we’ll be featuring a series of articles by Princess Fanning. Princess is a part of the STEP-UP Achieve program with a summer internship in the Labor Market Information Office and Workforce Development Division at the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. She’ll provide insight on her job experience, workplace skills and employment tips for teens.
